Download and install TweakUI for Windows XP.
It will do that and lots more that you will like.
It's almost a necessity for XP and only 146 kb.

I usually just rename the shortcut after creating it.

edit the Registry here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Change the value "Link" to 00 00 00 00

Or just rightclick on the shortcut and select "rename".

Yep, I do that all the time, but I should not have to do that. I was
able to stop that in Win98, but that was years ago, I cant rememeber
how. I got Tewak-UI, but am not finding a setting for this issue in it.

It's under Explorer... look for the prefix 'Shortcut to' option and
uncheck it.
