How do I get old mouse settings out of the registery. I am using Win 2k
w/sp4 and have just purchased a new MS Expolrer 2.0 intellemouse
(wireless) - All works well and the problems are over except that there are
still registery notices (4) every time I reboot. I need the registery keys
and what should be chopped out.

Post the "notices" so we can see what you've got.

Sorry for the omission, Dave, guess I assumed that you would know. They are:

#1: Cannot find the file 'Pointer.exe' (or one of its components). Make
sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are
available.

#2: Could not load or run 'Pointer.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure
the file exist on your computer or remove the reference to it in the
registry

#3: Cannot find the file 'Mousemgr.exe' (or one of its components)... [rest
same as in #1 above]

#4: Could not load or run 'Mousemgr.exe' specified in the registry. Make
sure... [rest same as #2]

Hope this helps - I could not cut and paste the notices, hence wrote the
text down.

Cordially,

Birl...

Did you install the software that came with your new mouse?

FYI;
When you view the logged events in Event Viewer (double-click them in the
right-hand pane) in the upper right corner, third button down is a copy to
clipboard, then you can paste in the body of a reply message.

Yes, and it works perfectly. The old one gave numerous errors and I could
never find out why. It was not on the progran list for removal as most
prograns were so I simply deleted it. The error notices are the result.

That might be the problem. You probably should have just installed the new
software and it would/should have upgraded it.

Natively you can; Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column, you'll find the path
to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup" directories or from the
registry's "Run" keys. (note that this window is read-only so you must
manually navigate to the location below to edit or otherwise delete) Post
the output if you need help.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

or copy msconfig from Windows XP to the "windows" directory
or AutoRuns from sysinternals
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

That is exactly what I DID do. I did properly install the new software and
it did not correct the problem. What are the registry keys where such
software is to be found. With that I can remove the offenders.
Incidentally, thanks for the information on dropping the errors to the
clipboard - I found no mention there of these errors. They seemingly only
show as pop-ups shortly after booting and when they are deleted everything
else is normal and no errors occur thereafter.

"What are the registry keys where such software is to be found?"

See my previous reply for instructions on finding this information.

Dear Dave,

Thank you kindly - it was entirely my error, I did not read past the first
paragraph and didn't see the instructions you gave me. They worked very well
and enabled me to remove the offending entries from the registry. It now
boots wothout the notices. I am grateful for your patience with an old 86
year old man. Thanks again!

Birl...

No problem. Glad to hear it' sorted. You're welcome.
