After Windows Update does it's thing and the computer
operates without bugs from the update is it possible to
delete the $NTUninstall files which are left behind on the
disk? They seem to waste a lot of disk space.

Once you are happy that you will not want to uninstall a given fix,
delete away. Or copy away the lot to a CD say, just in case. Cross
refer the Qnnnnnn or KBnnnnnn number to the description at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn

Once you have deleted the folder, if you try to use the entry in
Add/Remove that will (naturally) fail, and offer to remove itself from
the list
