XP update files

In my Windows folder are over 100 files that are named: $NTUninstall,
followed by the KB..... number of the update. Can I delete these files after
the updates are installed? They take up a huge amount of space on my HD.

Yes
You can safely delete those folders but after this you'll not be able to
uninstall installed updates. ;)
I always delete those folders as I don't need to uninstall those updates.

If you delete them, you will no longer be able to uninstall the update.
If that is not a concern, then see
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm for a utility to
delete the backups and also remove the then defunct registry keys that
contain the uninstall information.

These folders and associated files are safe to remove, however once deleted
you will no longer be able
to un-install a patch or update that was associated with the deleted
folder/files.
I would keep the most recent set (last two months just in case) and delete
the older updates.

One folder you should not delete is: $hf_mig$
