Removing Norton Security Scan

W

W. eWatson

I discovered a problem with a program that the vendor thinks possibly
occurred because of an over sealous virus scan program. I may have to
re-install the vendor program. This may be common among virus programs now.

I had let my agreement with Norton expire a few years ago. This morning I
noticed it was still on my Start menu, so fired it up. It wanted to know if
I would permit an update. I said OK. It looks like it installed the free
Norton Security Scan in place of whatever I had there. Worse it seems to
have scheduled a detection scan 3 times during the week. I see no way to
disable that. I've been letting my DSL ISP protect me, and have never
experienced viruses of any kind.

I Google to see if there is a way to disable the scan, but only found ways
to remove it. Some thing Add/Remove won't do it completely, and suggest
<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsg...>. tsg? Well, the link turns
into <http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

The only real way to get Symantec's crap off your computer is to format
your hard drive and do a reinstall of XP.

Let me try again. There are quite a few peeps on here that slag off Symantec
Norton in favour of free progs. Is it just $ or what?

Nope, Symantec is hated because it's products cause serious problems for
a lot of users, slowing down computers to the point of being unusable,
and causing various disruption to installed software. It's also an
absolute b*st**d to remove, once installed. There are even special
utilities to help clean up a computer which has had Norton / Symantec
installed - see here:

It's a shame, 'cos way back in the mists of time symantec PC tools was a
suite of very, very good utilities which most PC savvy users would swear
by - unfortunately, now they make products which most PC savvy users
swear at.

I think I know bias when I see it, so the question remains, what's the best
way to get rid of it. One way or the other I will start removing it in a few
hours. In any case, I think it's way too bold of Norton to put something on
my machine that I don't want, and give me no way to stop it from scheduling
scans. If there's a way of stopping the scheduling, I'd like to know.

That was back before they were aquired by Symantec. In the days of DOS,
Norton Utilities and Norton Commander were both outstanding packages, as was
PC Tools (Central Point Software, IIRC).

Not so in the modern Windows environment, sad to say.

Format the computer. Reinstall XP. Symantec puts so many tentacles all
over the registry it's quicker to just reinstall Windows.

No, not at all, I have no particular axe to grind and I am not
affiliated in any way with any antivirus product, I am merely speaking
from extensive experience working within the computer industry.

I am certainly not alone in this, and I think you will find very few
computer professionals who would endorse the use of Symantec's current
products.

It was aimed at both of you.
