Removing Highlighting

I have a document with highlighted text. We remove highlighting all th
time by either using the icon or going through Tools Track Changes an
unchecking the boxes. Neither of these are working. I checked to se
if the document was protected and it wasn't. Any ideas? (it's Wor
97)

Select the text and go to Format | Borders and Shading to see if the
"highlighting" is shading applied to the text.
