I have followed the procedure for removing games from W2K but I cannot
get seem to gain ccess to the Accessories folder under Remove Windows
Components for some reason. It does not appear as an option at all and
there are four games plus paint, wordpad and other items on the system.

I have removed all instances of HIDE in the file "sysoc.inf" which
appears only one time under "C:\winnt\servicepackfiles\i386" on both my
W2K systems.

Can someone help?

For the games/ accessories open;
%systemroot%\inf\sysoc.inf
and find the line
AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,HIDE,7
under
; old base components
and remove
HIDE
from the line, save the file, then you can use Control Panel|Add/ Remove
Programs|Add/ Remove Windows Components, choose "Details" for "Accessories
and Utilities" and uninstall away.

(don't remove anything else)

Dave:

Like I said, I have done this and still there is no entry for
Accessories and Utilities under Remove Windows Compoonents on either of
two separate W2K systems I have.

Then I misunderstood. I thought you said "removed all instances" There may
be some sort of corruption elsewhere.

I suppose but how can this happen to two systems installed from the same
W2K disc some many months apart?

Question: From my W95 days it was sometimes nacesssary to have to
install windows components just to be able to uninstall them. Does this
sound like this is the case, here?

Based on your original post the file is damaged/corrupt. I'd try a new copy
expanded from your Windows install CD-Rom or a service pack file. Which ever
is newer.

Thinking that perhaps if I reinstall the games I might be able to
unstall them I have tried to install items from the Accessories folder
using Install Add-On Components from my W2K Install CD and that folder
does not even show up! The first item is Indexing Service followed by
Internet Explorer.

This is odd since I have games, paint, wordpad and all the other items
installed on these systems. I have no other install CD. This is the one
I used to create these systems. Very strange.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Should I run the W2K
install disk and ask for a "repair"? Is this what you mean?

I do have Service Pack 4 installed already. Will this get removed if
I run the repair?

Thanks

No, just replaced the damaged file sysoc.inf Yes, all service pack and
updates are removed when you perform a repair install. Not necessary.

Issue resolved.

By studying my "third" W2K system I saw there were actually two
instances of that "sysoc.inf" file. One under "i386" and one under
"inf". The "inf" folder was hiddden on my two other system and it did
not show up even when I did a search for that "sysoc.inf" file.

Interesting that searching will not find files that are in hidder folders :(

Anyway, when I made the folder visible I was able to remove HIDE, take
off the card games, reHIDE the Accessories folder and rehide the INF
folder from view.

Thanks, Dave, for the help.

I found a file called "sysoc.in" (none with ".inf") in the i386 folder
on my W2K install CD. I placed this file in the
C:\Winnt\ServicePack\I386 folder on my conputer (I made the original
sysoc_old.inf) but it does not look the same. It is not a text file like
the old one was.

Where am I going wrong, here?

BTW: I even tried replacing the sysoc.inf file with one from my
third W2K system that I do not have this same issue with (I can see and
change the Accessories folder on this system... and the same install CD
was used to make it) but it made no difference.

Still no access to the Accessories folder under Add/Remove Windows
Components.

You can expand a new copy of the file from your Windows 2000 install CD-Rom

From a command prompt you can expand the file. An example;

expand E:\I386\sysoc.in_ %systemroot%\inf\sysoc.inf
would expand a new copy to the \inf directory.

Also you'll want to use the correct version for the service pack level
you're at. So you may need to extract the file from a service pack.

To extract the service pack files without installing them, execute
J:\W2kSP4\W2KSP4.exe /x
Then when prompted, specify a directory to hold the extracted files.
