Hello,

I just reloaded Windows and almost everything (after the crash), and
now when I click on my pics, they appear on the Windows Picture & Fax
Viewer, then to edit them, Paint. I don't like those!

Is it possible to go back to the other way the pics appear with the
smudging, brightness, the showing of how large the pictures are, etc.
setting?

Also, (I may have to find the MSN newsgroup for this), is everything is
now smaller on my screen (websites), and what MSN told me didn't do
anything when I "updated" my IE settings.

Thank you for any help you can send my way!

By default, Windows XP opens all picture files (gif,jpg,...) with the
included Windows Picture and Fax Viewer no matter what other picture viewers
you have installed. To disable the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer,
unregister shimgvw.dll. This can be done from command prompt:

regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

(Additional note: unregistering shimgvw.dll will also disable thumbnail view
in Explorer and may cause problems changing user account and desktop
background pictures. To reenable Picture and Fax viewer again type:
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll)

from...
Disable Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Or load whatever program that want to handle pictures and it will disable
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer for you.

I did it, but yes, then I couldn't even click open the pics. I wish I
could go back to the way it was. :(

No clue as to what program you were using?

Maybe IrfanView?

IrfanView - one of the most popular viewers worldwide
[[IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for
non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003.

It is trying to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals.]]

This looks really helpful.

No, it was the basic program on Windows before XP decided to add this.
For years, when I clicked on a picture, it would come up with the
taskbar above (brightness, smudging, etc), the bottom would show the
size of the picture, cutting and pasting was a breeze, etc. Simple
stuff.

If I remember correctly, Windows 95 used Internet Explorer to view pictures.

Windows 98, Me and 2000 have a default viewer used for opening and
viewing images and this viewer is called Kodak Imaging for Windows.

Kodak imaging for Windows is not included with Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308979

Kodak Imaging© will not work on WindowsXP©

For WindowsXP© users, we recomend using another free program. There is a
list of free imaging software here.

Here's a program that costs money, but has a 14-day evaluation version...

For Microsoft Windows XP users seeking the familiar Kodak Imaging for
Windows capabilities

Imaging for Windows provides the imaging component for Microsoft Windows XP.

Hmm, the guy who worked on my computer in the past hasn't answered my
emails. Everything was fine until the corrupted files of MSN destroyed
everything, and now.... I can't even get the settings of the text and
picture size on the internet working either. I have to see what Vista
has to offer, as this is garbage!

Thank you to everyone who has given me help. I will go on as I can't
do anything right now on the computer.

I can't even get the settings of the text and
picture size on the internet working either.

Internet Explorer | View | Text Size | Pick a size.

Also...
In Internet Explorer and Outlook Express Ctrl + mouse wheel zooms the
Text Size. The same as View | Text Size | Pick a size. Each notch on the
wheel changes to the next Text Size.

I added Irfanview, but I can't crop and add them to other pictures like
I used to. I will try Xnview now to see if it's better. Thanks all!

Actually, I was wrong. I have both on the computer now, and though
it's not the same, I think I can get used to both of them (for now).

I deleted Irfanview, as it interferred with my CD burner, but Xnview is
pretty cool. Thanks!

I don't like those either. Did you try System Restore to go back to what you
had that you liked? I like "Picture it" to do all my photo editing. If you
have it (and you should have if using Windows XP), try "file associations" to
"Open With" Picture it.

I can't seem to find Picture it. Nope, not at all. :(
