Removing Duplicate Personal Folders

Hi, my question is a bit similar to one posted here a couple days ago, but as
that one didn't get a response, I thought I'd try my luck. I'm going to try
to explain in detail exactly what I've done so far, so if this is too long,
please just read the summary and ignore the details. Thanks in advance for
your help.

Summary:
I have a duplicate set of personal folders that will not go away. I have
deleted all my .pst files and re-installed outlook (2003 on WinXP fully
patched), creating new, completely empty personal folders, but one set of
personal folders stubbornly refuses to go away. Even after starting outlook
with all *.pst files on the computer deleted (and being forced to create a
new .pst when outlook loads), I can see a set of personal folders with all my
emails, contacts, etc. still there.

Details (kind of long):

I installed office pro 2k3 on a new WinXP (home) system a few months ago and
attempted to transfer all my settings and messages from my old PC to the new
one. For outlook, I copied over my .PST file and used the file import feature
to get everything imported. As soon as I did this, I noticed that I now had
two identical sets of personal folders in Outlook. I was in a rush and didn't
really explore why or how this happened at the time.

I noticed that my Contacts were not working as an address book, meaning that
my email addresses didn't auto-fill on new emails, but email addresses I had
recently used would auto-fill. I dealt with this without too much complaint
because I really don't need to send too many emails from this system - this
is a home system and gets a whopping total of approximately 10 emails sent
from it on a busy week.

In the last couple weeks, I've started working from home a lot more and the
email volume has increased quite a bit. In an attempt to fix the problem with
the duplicate personal folders and non-linked contacts, I un-installed and
re-installed outlook (after backing up my .pst files to a remote location),
hoping that this would get rid of the duplicate personal folders. No such
luck.

Upon loading outlook, I am told that "the file c:\....\outlook.pst could not
be found" , and am given the option to create a new .pst file. When I do
this, outlook continues to load just fine, but I can see my old personal
folders sitting there, with all my emails and contacts plainly available!

How is this possible? Where does outlook store all this? I would think that
with all .pst files on my computer deleted, this information would be long
gone. Please help me! At this point, I'm just trying to get a clean install
of outlook that doesn't keep any information or settings from previous
installations.

If you've read this far, thank you for your patience and any assistance you
can give me.

Thank you for your quick response Russ. I figured that this issue had been
brought up before, but somehow didn't search using the right keywords.
