Removing Domain Controller From AD.

There were two domain controllers in a Windows 2000 child domain. Also, the
scheme has been extended because the forest root server is a Windows 2003
forest domain controller.
For a multiple reasons not to be stated here, one domain controller became
unavailable. It has been two months since it became unavailable. It will
never return to be used as a domain controller.

I want to remove the missing domain controller from Active Directory. Then
want to DCPromo its replacement into the AD. All roles have been moved to
the remaining domain controller.

Looking for advice on how to remove the missing domain controller from the AD.

Hello,

I believe Tomasz has provided the exact article you want. KB216498 has
addressed how to remove data in Active Directory after an unsuccessful
domain controller demotion. You can refer to KB216498 to remove the old DC
referenced in the AD and use the normal process to install win2k3 on old
machine, then promote it to be an additional DC in your domain as you did
before.

Any update, let us get in touch!

If the server that has become unavailable is still up and running -just not
replicating or whatever, then you either need to rebuild it, or run dcpromo
/forceremoval on it.

This can be done before or after the cleanup referenced by the others.

If it's dead, then this post is of no consequence.
