Removing custom categories in Outlook 2002

Is there a way to remove a custom category without resetting the whole master
list in Outlook 2002?

I have created a couple categories that I want to remove, but using the
delete command leaves them on the master list. However, you cannot assign
that category any longer.

When you create a new category with the same name, the list shows both of
them, with no way to distinguish which is the functional category, and which
is the busted one.

Please clarify what you want to do -- clean up the master list to remove a
category you're not already using or remove the category from existing
items.

I have found that in order to delete a Category you must first remove each
and every one of the records from that Category.

Or maybe you meant it the other way around -- remove the category from the
records marked with it?

No, I'm trying to delete it from the Master Category list.

Then just do it. Deleting a category from the Master Category List will have
no effect on any Outlook items that have the category set on them.

Well, it turned out that I first needed to remove every one of the records in
that category. I had missed an old one, and needed to go back several months
to find the last one.

It DOES make a difference if there are items with that category set on them.
You cannot simply remove the category. It stays until all the Outlook items
have had that category removed.
