Removing 'column' formatting of text in Word

When I want to reuse text and I copy it from the source and paste into Word,
if the source was a column of text, the pasted text in Word has carriage
returns at the end of every line. I want the text to be free flowing, not
having those extra carriage returns. The Replace function will not accept the
carriage return, so I don't know how to take them out.
