Removing Archive Folder

D

Dominique

I am currently implementing an Archiving system called Mimosa NearPoint. I
have created a Group Policy that will disable the use of Auto Archive for
users Outlook 2003 and 2007 clients. However, even though the Auto Archive is
disabled (which disabled the ability to add the Archive Folder), the Archive
Folders remains in the users' Outlook.

I know that users can remove the folder themselves by right-clicking
"Archive Folders" and selecting "Close Archive Folders". However, I have over
five hundred users and would like to be able to take care of it for them by
forcing the deletion of the folder. Either via Group Policy or a script or??
Anyone ever had to do this before or have any ideas?

The Office Resource Kit should contain a tool that will allow you to modify
mail profiles en masse with PRF files.

We have transitioned most of our clients to Office 2007. I know that the
Office Resource kit is available for 2003, but what would I use for 2007?

I can't find the ORK for 2007 either, but the profiles should be compatible,
so perhaps the 2003 ORK would work.

The ORK has been replaced with the OCT for Office 2007 and is already
included in the installed for the Enterprise editions.
Simply start setup.exe from the CD/DVD with the /admin command line switch
to launch the OCT.

While they are compatible, the ORK for Office 2003 doesn't contain all prf
settings for Office 2007. Also, if you were to create an msi-package, the
settings would apply to Office 2003 and not Office 2007. Using the OCT is
the proper way to go.

Ok, great! I've run the setup.exe /admin command and configured a new MSP
file. This allowed me to "uncheck" the show Archive Folder checkbox in
Outlooks, Tools > Options > Other > Auto Archive section. However, if the
user already has an Archive folder, it doesn't remove it. These configs along
with the group policy I applied, simply disabled the Archive options. But
since the folder is already there, the only way I can see is to have the
person manually right-click the folder and select "remove". I will try to
figure out if there is some sort of script or command I can run to remove it
when they launch Outlook. If any of you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for all your great ideas so far.

That's correct behavior as you should see the option as "should Outlook show
the archiving folder after archiving?" It's not an on/off switch for current
mappings.

As Brian already mentioned; you should deploy a prf-file (or an mst-file
containing it) with modified or even new profile settings.
