Is it technically possible to REMOVE not DISABLE a service, used by a 3rd
party software, after it has been uninstalled?

Regards!

Hi Yezinki - Yeah, easily if you know the service name and have sc.exe on
your computer somewhere in the path. (It's usually in
%SystemRoot%\System32)

1. Click on start.
2. Click on Run
3. In the Open: field type: sc delete "Service Name" (the name of the
service you want to delete without the quotes)
4. Reboot your computer

If you just type: sc without any parameters it'll show you all of the
options.

Hi Jim Byrd,
I did run the sc delete command with the service name using exact
parameters, the DOS windows appeared & than disappeared instantly.
The UN required services on reboot are still present.
What could be the reasons?
May be the Spy bot Tea timer is ON & monitoring the OS, so didn’t allow it
to happen?
OR does this command have to be run in safe mode?
Regards!

Just adding, the sc command does run. But again the DOS window disappears
when I press Y.
The services, while doing as you wrote were disabled?
Thanks any way. I appreciate your effort.

What is the service to which you are referring? If it was put there by
malware, there are other steps you can take to remove it. Certainly you
should be turning off Teatimer when making changes, but it would be
better if you told us what you are actually trying to do.

Hello Mr. Malke,

Thanks for confirming that tea timer should be turned OFF.

I installed Avast antivirus, trying to see if it was superior to AVG or not.

Unlike AVG, Avast when uninstalled doesn’t remove its services.

Even after uninstalling Avast, 4 of its services are still present, plus a
folder & its contents in the programs section.

Personally I found AVG much better.

Regards!

It's actually a Command Prompt window you're referring to, not
a DOS window. DOS is an operating system, and there is no room
for it under WinXP.

Instead of running sc.exe from the Run box, run it in a proper
Command Prompt so that you can see what's going on. To
start a Command Prompt, run cmd.exe from the Run box.
You can then run sc /? to see all the options.

Hi,
Sorry about confusion regarding command prompt & DOS.
Your suggested method doesn’t delete these services.
Thanks for trying.
Regards!

I think I shall have to format my OS thanks to Avast!

If you utilize "Imaging" and do it on a regular schedule, you'll avoid
format/reinstalls. It will allow you to "Experiment" with applications
and tools and be able to return your system to a known state.

Hello Mr. R. McCarty
True I have that option too.
Since I use Ghost 2003 to image my OS after a fresh install & than save that
image.
Personally the only good product by Symantec.
It takes a few mins to restore the image.
I don’t use Restore point service & disable it from the very outset.
Thanks for reminding.
Regards!

You shouldn't have to re-install the OS.

You can identify services using Computer Management, Services, (the same
place where you tried to disable them) double click on the service and
it will show the path to the executable. You can then search the
registry using Reedit for the name of the executable file and delete any
keys containing it, then reboot and delete the executable file.

Try using hijackthis. Navigate to the Misc Tools section by clicking on the
config... button.

Hello Mr. Steve N,

Thanks a lot for the info.

I did as you suggested, first deleted the registry entries, than on reboot,
the services disappeared.

Despite that there are still around 70 plus invalid Avast entries, which I
didn’t delete. (Found by just typing Avast, search System registry.)

Than using search looked for all Avast related files & deleted them.

I very particular about my machine, don’t like junk files/ clutter on my
drives or invalid registry entries, even if the OS is working error free.

That is the reason that I immediately create a Ghost image after a fresh
install of the OS, soft wares & their respective updates.

Any how at least I have learnt how to remove an un required 3rd party service.

Once again thanks,
Regards!

Great news, Yezinki, I am so glad my advice was helpful to you!

Happy computing!
