Hi all

I have a small problem. On my C boot drive I have a directory that is left
over from a previous installation. have tried to delete the directory but
at the end of the dir tree sits a folder that just wont go, any reference to
it, it comes back with this fil/dir no longer exists. I have tried on Dos
box, and booted floopy dos still wont go. I have tried from another location
on the net, stil wont go, I have tried all that I know to get rid of it and
still no go.

the dir/file is img128.fileshack.us.
it sits at main>My Do>bf2-dead-files>dead-dead>img128.fileshack.us.

This is proving to test my wits and belife in windows as a whole.

I dont now what to do now.

One thing I Can NOT do and that is format the drive.

Thank you for any tips or solves to this upfront

When you write "main>My Do>bf2-dead-files>dead-dead>img128.fileshack.us",
do you mean "c:\main\My Do\bf2-dead-files\dead-dead\img128.fileshack.us?

Why can't you format the partitions? No backups?

How much space does the tree consume?

Have you tried running chkdsk.exe? If you haven't, make sure
to have tested backups of your important data files. Chkdsk
can destroy data that is partially readable now.

Yes I do mean "c:\main\My Do\bf2-dead-files\dead-dead\img128.fileshack.us.

I am begining to think the problem my lie with the fact the dir name has 3
full stops in it. I can copy the dir out and it then does not have the end
full stop and can be opened, nothing in it.

Why can't you format the partitions? No backups?
....Correct no backups Not my drive. Customers drive.

.... How much space does the tree consume?
The end Dir is Zero Bytes Tree is just the dir structure no files.

.... Have you tried running chkdsk.exe? If you haven't, make sure
Yes run chkdsk no errors reportede no lost cluster no lost data.

Surley there has to be a way of getting rid of it, with out reformating the
drive.

I apologies by coming into this thread late and this might have
already been suggested but.....

I had a directory that I could not delete from within XP. I booted
into safe mode and did a "RD [directory.name] and it was gone.

Hi Stan
Thanks for you answer after reading your post it was clear to me what I had
to do.

The File system is in some way corrupt.
The command RD /S [foldername] was the first step I took, but I had
forgotten that useindf the DIR /X command tells you what the short 8.3
filenames is, and it was this that I had to remove, and not the long version.

So by useing the RD on the 8.3 File name It has now got rid of it.

Thank you all for your replies.
