Removing a dead DC from Active directory

Hi There

We recently had a server crash that destroyed 1 of 2 of our domain controllers in our UK domain. Can you point me in the right direction to find out information on Deleting any reference to the server from Active directory. I will be rebuilding the DC in the same domain but will be calling the server a different name. When i rebuild the server how do i get it listed in the sites and services as Automatically Generated under the NTDS settings or will it have to be added manually

Kind Regards.

Tony.

Tony,

Please do not misunderstand me, but this question has been asked and
answered at least once in the last four hours. Not to mention probably
three times a day.

Anyway, to answer your question you would need to do what is called a
metadata cleanup. MS has published a Knowledge Base article on how to do
this. Please take a look at the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=216498

This should take you step by step on how to do this. You might want / need
to install the Support Tools on the remaining DC ( and I would suggest that
the Support Tools be installed on each and every WIN2000 Server in your
environment ) to make use of adsiedit.

The Support Tools can be located on the WIN2000 Server CD as well as on the
WIN2000 Service Pack CD in the Support | Tools folder. I would opt for the
Service Pack CD - or the download. If all of your servers are at SP3, then
I would use the Support Tools from SP3. If all of your servers are at SP4,
then I would use the Support Tools from SP4.

HTH,

Cary
