remove symbol in front of cursor

there is a symbol after my cursor when iam trying to write something in word.
How do I get rid of it? Its always there. And seems to mess things up. Anyone
know how to remove it?

Toggle display of non-printing characters (CTRL+SHIFT+*). If that is
what it is, then it really messes nothing up.
