remove recycle bin icon

David M

I would like to have an icon free desktop, and I now only
have the recycle bin left on the desk top. How can I pin
this icon to the start menu so that I can access the
recycle bin restore properties etc from the start menu?

I can not find how to move the recycle bin icon to the
start menu.

Many thanks

David

Drag your recycle bin and put it on Start button
it will open the start menu. and just put it there.

Great, that works and I have a recycle bin in my start
menu.

Alas, I can not find away now to remove the recycle bin
icon from my desktop. control panel > desktop > customize
desktop does not have an option under desktop icons for
the recycle bin.

Any ideas how to remove the recycle bin icon from the
desktop? A right mouse click does not show a delete
option.

Thanks

David

Simply delete
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Deskt
op\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}" and restart. When you
restart, the Recycle Bin is no longer on the desktop. When you delete stuff,
it still prompts to send it to the Recycle Bin, as always. To fully delete
something, just delete it from C:\Recycled. To view this folder, you have to
have everything set to be seen, including hidden folders and procted OS
files and all that

Many Thanks to all the replies.

I have used the easiest method that David posted: "You
can also right click the desktop and choose Arrange By -
Hide Desktop Icons"

I now have an icon free desktop and can enjoy my
wallpaper to the full and lauch all my apps via menus and
task bar - many thanks to all

The method gioven to you to remove from the desktop does
work. However it is the only method for OS prior to XP.
XP introduced a new means which hides the icons (prior
versions removed the icons), eg believe it or not all the
old icons are on your desktop, just hidden.
To hide recycle bin the same as XP does My Computer go

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi on\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel
and add Recycle Bin's number and set it to 1.
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} = 0x1

Removing icons (as opposed to hiding them) can break
certain features of windows. This doesn't apply
specifically to the Recycle Bin but some other standard
icons.
You can also right click the desktop and choose Arrange
By - Hide Desktop Icons (this is a different form of
hiding)..
