remove programs from start-up

How do I go about removing programs that automatically
run when i boot up...I have way to much running and
slowing things down... quick time, winamp etc are all
automatically statred - i can start these when i need
them , correct ?

Yes, you can start them when needed. Click Start - Run and type MSCONFIG.
Click the Startup tab, then uncheck any boxes for applications you don't
want to load at start up.
 
A more effective method would be to notify the programs
themselves from within the programs themselves that you do
not want them to run at Startup. There is usually an
option in Preferences or Options that will allow you to do
this. With the MSCONFIG method (which certainly can be
effective) you run the risk that the program will just put
itself right back on the Startup tab . . . because it says
to do so within the program . . .

I click Start> Run ...but i dont see start up tab...just
folder that is labled Backup ?
