remove one person from automatic e-mail completion?

Your question is not very clear. Do you mean removing a person from an
Outlook distribution list? (Open the list and delete the person) Or do you
want to send an Outlook e-mail to a distribution list but you don't want a
specific person who is on the distribution list to get this particular
e-mail? (In OL 2002/2003 address the e-mail to the list, click on the +
sign to the left of the list to open the collection of names and delete the
person; Your distribution list will remain intact) If not, maybe others
can suggest something.

Sorry about my lack of clarity. The feature I am writing about is the one
where automatic completion takes place when you start to type the name of the
person. Is there a way to eliminate one person from this automatic
completion? Thanks.

Not without either removing the person from your Address Book or changing
the display name so that it's different from what you are typing.

Ah. That is a little more complicated. This question appears from time to
time on the Outlook Contacts forum/BB. This feature uses the AutoCompletion
cache, which by default is named Outlook.nk2, and you can search for it. It
is a hidden file, so make sure you set Folder Options to display hidden
files. Just to be sure we remain confused, there is apparently a difference
between AutoCompletion and Auto Resolution. I think the former stores
e-mail addresses you manually type out and has nothing to do with your
Contacts. The latter apparently uses the first few keystrokes to identify
people in your Contacts, which seems to have nothing to do with the
Outlook.nk2 file. There is a fair amount of (confusing) information about
AutoCompletion and/or nk2if you search in Outlook Help or the Outlook
Contacts forum/BB ( I found nothing on the Knowledge Base but I only spent a
minute or two searching), but I have not found anything on AutoResolution.

You can make Outlook create a new Outlook.nk2 file by renaming the existing
one to Outlook.old or something like that and restarting OL. The good news
is that this will get rid of the unwanted AutoCompletion entry. The bad
news is that it also gets rid of all your other AutoCompletion entries! The
maybe-not-so-bad-news is that after you look into the complexity of what you
want to do starting all over again with a new Outlook.nk2 file might be the
simple solution. If you don't like the result, all you have to do is
rename the new nk2 file and restore the old nk2 file. You will be back
where you started.
