Remove MSN from XP SP2 Install

H

Henners

Hi There

I have been successfull in extracting/changing/resigning the firewall inf
file in my XP SP2 Standalone distro folder, but I notice that when SP2 is
installed, invariably MSN Messenger also tags along.

How can I change the distro folder (extracted service pack) to not install
Messenger?

Thanks,

In your unattend.txt/winnt.sif file, make sure you have the following:

[Components]
msmsgs=off

Or do you mean something else?

Thanks for that...

I understand how to do it if I am doing a fresh install (slipstream),
however, we are deploying SP2 on top of exsisting XP SP1 machines. Those
machines had Messenger removed from them on the image we built. XP2 installs
MSN, but I would rather it didnt.

I am not aware of a way I can use a unattend.txt file for a SP2 deployment.

Thanks,
Henry

The information is provided "as is", it is suggested you research for
yourself before you take any advice - you are the one ultimately
responsible for your actions/problems/solutions. Know what you are
getting into before you jump in with both feet.

Can I edit the update.inf file somehow? Id rather not deploy SP2 and have
Windows Messenger go to everyones machines. If one somehow is out of policy
for testing or something, my GPO with "prevent it from running" becomes
ineffective.
