Remove IIS from XP home

G

Guest

Somehow IIS was installed on my XP Home SP2 machine. I have no recollection
of doing it but suspect it happened when I installed VS2005 Express which
installed Net2. I have uninstalled VS2005 Express and I think part of IIS
disappeared at the same time.

I'd like to finish the uninstall of IIS but can't find reference in
add/remove -windows components or in services.

I get this message which is why I want to finish the uninstall: A security
check failed bacause the IIS Admin Service did not respond. To fix this,
repair or remove IIS, and restart computer

How do I proceed? Registry changes??

Thanks,
RON C

Only w that does not have windows a start is WebClient. I see nothing in
add/remove win comp. either. There are about 50 files with iis in their name
and about 20 entries in the registry with it.

Thanks for responding.

How did IIS get installed in the first place, since it can only be installed
on Pro?

| In services.msc do you see the www service listed??

I gather it can but takes some work. It was installed along with VS Express
and Net2 by a young guys who USED to borrow my PC. He wasn't happy using
VC++2003. I uninstalled VS Express and gather that IIS was partially removed
by that.

My guess is he did some unsupported changes to the operating system in an
attempt to get PWS work on XP Home. Since it is not shown in Add and Remove
Programs/Windows components then you will need to manually remove associated
files and registry entries to see if that fixes your problem. You can search
the registry for program related entries or live with it as if it is not
causing any problems. You can use msconfig or Autoruns from
SysInternals/Microsoft to view and disable non essential startup processes
and services. If it was my computer I would probably reinstall the operating
system because who knows what they all did when they borrowed it.

Steven,

I've thought of reinstalling but don't have all of the files for some
programs to do it. As my friend has some of my CDs. This is not a good
situation let me tell you.

Can I delete any registry item with IIS in it? All IIS named files are in
one directory.

Thanks for the help.

That should not cause a problem with your operating system. Best practice is
to backup any registry keys before you delete them "just in case". If after
a period of time you see no problems you can delete them.

I downloaded Autoruns from sysinternals. Much better than MSconfig.

Is there a replacement for regedit to make things easier?

Thanks again.

I removed all reference to IIS in the registry except for a codec with iis in
it's name. Problem is no change.

I did find this in a file iis6.log:

Is ASP supposed to exist without IIS? If not, I need to remove it also.
