I have an audio file (a speech) in MP3 format that has a really
annoying hiss in the background. Is there any freeware to help
eliminate it or clean up the sound of the file?
Maybe. If the file has hiss at the bginning or end - hiss that is
*just* hiss - it is relatively easy. Using a wave editor such as
Goldwave or AudaCity...
1. Load the file (MP3 will be decoded to wave)
2. Mark a brief section (fraction of a second) of just hiss
3. Have the program use that template to clean
4. Save the file, selecting the file type and - if MP3 - the bit rate.
The programs' help file will explain more fully.
If the hiss can't be isolated, there are other programs that can be used
with a varying degree of success. I know of no free ones but several
are listed in my dandies (see below).
