When I create shortcuts to files, the shortcuts contain the extension of the file they point to. So e.g. I create a shortcut to a
programme called example.exe and the shortcut is also called example.exe. I remember vaguely that this could be changed on WinXP, so
that the shortcut is just called "example" (no extension). Where is this setting in the registry?

Are you looking to do something different than right clicking the shortcut
and using "rename" to change the displayed name of the shortcut ?
