Remove field codes from contents area

I've built TOC by applying field code to each heading and I did
ctrol+shift+F9 to remove hyperlink from the table of contents. I like to
know if I could remove field code I entered in each heading…so I won’t see it
when I click on “show/hide†button.

Is there a way to convert a document with TOC field into a plain doc?

Thanks.

TC fields are Hidden text. If Ctrl+* does not hide them, go to Tools |
Options | View and remove the check box for "Hidden text." If you have
unlinked your TOC, you have done more than remove the hyperlinking; you have
converted the TOC to plain text so that it can no longer be updated. If
that's the case, you might as well delete all the XE fields as well. You can
do this using Find and Replace.

Thank you. Removing XE fields(---> meaning toc field codes?) is what I want
to do after document is finalized. I've tried find & replace using find {*}
and replace. It doesn't seem to work. What am I missing?

Thanks.

Sorry, I meant TC fields. With Hidden text displayed (if you can't see the
fields, Find can't either), type ^19 TC or ^d TC in the "Find what" box and
leave the "Replace with" box empty. Replace All.
