Remove DC & DNS from AD

H

Hayden

Hi:
We'are planning to phase out an old server which is the first DC & DNS
of our Active Directory. We just installed a new server and have it
promoted as a DC of the AD, however what is the proper way to have the
DNS migrated to the new server? Should I:

Simply configure the new DC as a secondary DNS server and unplugged
the old server from the network and expect everything will work
correctly?

Please advise.

If your DNS is AD-integrated, you can setup your new DC similarly. Wait for
the data to be replicated to the new DC, point all clients to the new
DC/DNS, veryify that everything is ok befor eretiring the old one.
More importantly, your first DC,, by default, will be holding on to most of
the FSMO roles. You got to ensure that all FSMO roles are transferred to
other DCs before retiring it. Refer to the following article for more info
on FSMO:

ys@work is correct. When you get ready to retire the server run dcpromo to
remove it. The only thing that will not get transferred is the GC role.
