removal of unwanted files

some unwanted files resist removal in "add/remove programs". some have "write protected", some do not. Some are shown in McAfee alerts trying to connect to internet and I'm able to write down the names
I own this PC and am infuriated when an unknown power dictates what will be in my face and what will not. Is there a way to at least remove (and maybe block) uninvited files and programs? although I am able to follow instruction to the letter, I am a PC beginner and need to be told things you would take for granted. Thanks
