Hi -

You have to be logged on to the desktop with a username
and password that the laptop recognizes as an
administrator. Does your laptop have a user account with
the same username and password as your desktop (and does
that account have administrator priveleges)?

Probably just a typo, but the slashes in your command
line are pointing the wrong direction - but if it's not a
typo that might be worth looking at ;-)

Last, you can't use 'shutdown' to turn off a machine that
has XP Home installed because all remote access to an XP
Home machine is through the guest account and it doesn't
have rights to shut the machine down from remote.

Hope this helps -

Hi All, I have a small home network, im trying to use
the shutdown command on my desktop to shutdown my laptop.
I use
shutdown -r -m //192.168.1.2 After I press enter I get

Yes, I have set the username and password that I log into the laptop in the user accts on the desktop and vise versa. Example When I log into the desktop it comes up with my log in name already their "Plourdes" all I have to do is type in my password. I have that acct also in my laptop under user accts as well. Bolth have admin privlages. The funny thing is when I goto the run command and type in the ip address for eather computers I get the password box and guset acct is their and grayed out. I can not select my other accts! I have the guest acct turned off on bolth machines..
