"Remote Registry" Service corrupt?

D

Hi,

I am posting this on the Livecomm newsgroup as well as that's the
software that's having trouble installing, but I now think it's due to
the remote registry service not working correctly so I thought I would
post in here as it's more related to this newsgroup.

Does anyone know if I can remove the "Remote Registry" Service from
windows 2003 Enterprise Edition? I am trying to install the program
above and it needs to change the schema, the only way it can do this is
if the remote registry service is running ok. After removal I would
re-install it somehow.

Background information...

I had a Windows 2000 Domain, I then upgraded the DC's to windows 2003.
this is the first program to use the remote registry since the upgrade.
x.x.co.uk is the PDC, y.x.co.uk is another DC.

To verify that the remote registry service was working properly I done
the following..

I open regedit on a windows xp machine, and then select "File /
Connect Network Registry" I then select "x.x.co.uk" x.x.co.uk then
appears in my registry editor with 2 Keys "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and
"HKEY_USERS". When I try to expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE it gives me an
error of "Cannot open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: error while opening key."

If I open y.x.co.uk in registry editor and select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE it
comes up with no error.

thanks
Dave

Thanks Dave,

I managed to find that the "LOCAL SERVICE" account was missing from the
"WINREG" permissions, once added then given full control it worked like
a charm.

thankyou
