Remote procedure call (RPC) problem

hi

i think this is a weird problem, and hopefully something fixable.

my problem is, whenever i try to connect to the net via DUN (my only option)
after a few moments (2-5mins) of being connected winXP brings up a error
window (not a critical error, or BSOD) saying "blah blah blah... this was
caused by NT authority/system" the problem being an unknown remote procedure
call (RPC). i would screenshot and attach the error window, but i do not
have a network yet setup for file tranfer.

anyway, this is what i`ve tried....
reinstalled windows XP - complete install, not a repair.
tried both as quick format, and a full format install. (total of 2 installs)
swapped ISDN modem (serial) for another one (USB) - no luck, drives ok, and
winXP driver spec
swapped ISDN interface box (where the ISDN modem plugs into phone system) -
UK users should know about the white box on the wall of BT's
checking windows device manager - all is ok.
i cant see it being ISP problem either - this PC that i`m on now is on the
same ISDN ISP - BT Openworld.

any help, info, or tips please reply, and if possible cc it to
(e-mail address removed)

how it happened :- last time i used icq, i clicked on something it wanted to
download (ICQ addon), next time i log into ICQ, it auto downloads, and a few
moments later, this RPC problem occures. after completely uninstalling ICQ,
problem still occurs. so i reinstalling winXP, hopefully it would sort it
all out. seems to be more of a hardware or ISP (although unlikely) problem
now though.

i`ve have norton AV 2003 with latest virus list and BTOpenworld's email
virus/spam filters on - so unlikely to be a virus.

thanks in advance

This worked for me, no problems since:-

Right click on My computer - properties - remote - make sure both boxes are
unchecked.

I also removed some bogus/virus files from my folders and registry but I am
not sure whether they were there anyway but look out for any such as:

rpc.
kwbot.
msconfig32

I hope it works for you!

Go and get the patch from here, choose the right version for your system. If
you don't know whether your system is "32 bit" or "64 bit" then its 32 bit.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823980

Next check your system for unusual processes that may be running. In
particular watch out for:
(NOTE, THIS LIST IS NOT EXCLUSIVE, KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR ANY UNUSUAL ACTIVITY)
MSBlast.exe
rpc.exe
rpctest.exe
dcomx.exe
lolx.exe
worm.exe

Scan with an up-to-date virus scanner to help with removal of nasties that
might be left on your system.
Next, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and grab hold of *all*
critical updates. Yes, all of them. Try to make a habit of doing this on a
regular basis.

This is not a comprehensive guide, just a quick and dirty fix to stop the
worst of your immediate problems.

To stop the reboots: Go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc. Scroll down
to Remote Procedure Call (RPC)/Logon/First Failure/Restart the Service.

Then close Windows Explorer, End Process in the Task Manager for
msblast.exe, run the edit on line 257 then run the patch listed below it:
