Remote Procedure Call Locator stopped

I'm a Mac person trying to help my Mom with her Dell running XP Home. I used
Windows Update to install Service Pack 2, and now her PC has gone batty.
When I try to get to the internet, I get a Remote Procedure Call error, and
it shuts down the computer in 60 seconds.

Also, I get Generic Host Command errors.

Any ideas?

By the way, I checked under MSCONFIG, and the Remote Procedure Call Locator
is stopped.

The computer is infected with one of the Sasser worm variants. Run a virus
scan with an updated scanner.

Now the problem is it won't let me run the W32.Sasser Removal Tool I
downloaded from Symantec. If I try to open a web browser or task manager, it
gives me a Remote Procedure Call error and closes the computer in 60 seconds.

Unplug the connection to the network and it should let you stay up.
If the shutdown window opens again, go to Start/Run type "shutdown.exe -a"
to abort the shutdown.

Actually the forementioned shutdown silliness is a classic symptom of
the Blaster worm.

Have you tried to run the removal tool in safe mode?
