I want to log onto my office computer from
home and be able to print output from my
office computer's applications on my home
printer. Is there an article I can look at that
will tell me how to do that? The XP Pro
HELP page suggests that I can do that, but
not in explicit terms nor where to find "how
to".

Thanks,
Bill

The usual way is to set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) although you
could establish an RDP session without a VPN. In either case you need to
make certain adjustments to the router at your office. This requires the
cooperation of your network administrator and he is really the person who
should set up and test this facility. Note also that many local
multifunction printers (e.g. inkjet printers/copiers/scanners) are not
visible in an RDP session.

As others have said, VPM plus Remote Desktop is a way to go.
The "Good-Right-And-Holy Path", even....

The companies I work for all have canned routines that set one's
PC up with the right stuff.

Dunno how it goes when working from scratch. I would not be
hopeful at my expertise level. YMMV.

But I've dropped the VPN/RDP route in favor of something called
"TeamViewer".

They seem tb pretty solid - approved for use in the German
banking industry, for one - and they offer a freebie version
which I use.

Needs tb installed on your work box and your home box.

The attraction of TeamViewer is a *quick* connection. You double
click on a list and *zap*.... you're looking at your PC at work -
as opposed to having to fire up VPN, establish the connection,
and then fire up RDP.

I have not figured out how to print to my home printer from the
work PC window. My workaround is to install CutePDF on the work
machine and print to PDF, using TeamViewer's file transfer
ability to get the PDF to my home PC - from which I can then
print.

Bottom line, if you get bogged down with the VPN/RDP route, give
TeamViewer a try. Even I was able to get it up and running
without any problems - and that's saying something.

Also, I'm the de-factor computer support person for my extend
family and some friends - so I use TeamViewer extensively for
non-work activities too.

Did you actually get permission from your company or their IT folks to
connect your outside host into their network? If they detect the
intrusion (and they probably will), you are violating their policies
regarding corporate network access. Ask THEM if you are allowed to
connect your unmanaged and unregulated external host into their network
and how to do it. If allowed, THEY will need to set it up for you.
