Remote desktop

I want to establish remote connection to a computer which is in another city
and connected to the internet.

I have looked at the information in Vista help on how to do this but cannot
make the connection. Help says:

To connect to a remote computer, that computer must be turned on, it must
have a network connection, Remote Desktop must be enabled, you must have
network access to the remote computer (this could be through the Internet),
and you must have permission to connect. For permission to connect, you must
be on the list of users.

Remote computer is on, has internet connection, remote desktop is enabled
and I have permission to connect. I don't know how to get network access to
the remote computer through the internet!

Would greatly appreciate any help.

if the remote pc is connected straight to the internet, then all you need to
know is the IP address assigned to that PC. (just visit www.whatismyip.com
on the remote pc.). open the remote desktop client on the guest pc and
enter the IP for the host PC. if the host PC is part of a home or business
network, then it gets much trickier. you will need to find the IP address
of the PC on the internal network, and setup routers and firewalls to
forward the proper ports to that PC on the internal network.

If this is a machine to machine connection and no router is in play on the
other end, then the computer on the other end must have the inbound RDP port
open on the personal FW, which you can use Google to find out what that port
number is.

Or if there is a router in play on the other end, the RDP port must be port
forwarded to the machine running RD.

Of course, you need to know the Internet IP that's being used on the other
end.

There's no need for secrecy for the port number - MS publishes it.

"Port 3389 is the only port you need to open."
