Remote Desktop will not recognize local printer

I am using Windows XP Professional. I have an HP Officejet 7410 locally. I
use remote desktop 5.2 to connect to another remote Windows XP Professional
desktop. When establishing the connection, I choose to connect the local
resource "printers" so that I can print from my remote desktop session to
the printer in my local printer. However, the remote desktop session cannot
"see" my Officejet printer.

In the application log of the remote desktop, it complains about not having
the proper driver for the Officejet. At the remote computer, I downloaded
the drivers for the printer and installed them (and since rebooted) but it
will still not see the printer.

I found a Microsoft Q article #302361 which seemed to address the problem
and I implemented the registry change that it suggested but it still does
not work.

I have tried hooking this printer up through a network connection and then
tried using a USB connection but both connections perform the same way when
connected to remote desktop.

I contacted HP and was told that my scenario was not supported but I feel
that there has to be some sort of workaround for this issue.

If anyone has any ideas on this, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Rod

Multi-function printers are in general not supported under Remote
Desktop. As KB302361 suggests, you can try and set an LPT
port on your client PC instead of the DOT4 port. You can also
try and install the printer driver on the RDP host.

To make sure that this is the problem rather than something else,
install a simple printer driver such as the HP LJ4L on your client
PC. If you can see it under your RDP session then you know
that the problem is caused by the nature of the OfficeJet printer.

I have tried redirecting to an LPT port without success. Other printers show
up through the redirection, just not this Officejet. I know that the
multifunction printers are not supported through remote desktop but thought
that someone may have found a workaround for this.

I think I found a workaround for my Remote Desktop / Officejet problem. I
don't know if you have ever used Primo PDF, but it is a good, free way to
create a PDF file from anything by just printing to a Primo printer that it
installs. You can download it from www.primopdf.com . Anyway, I installed
Primo PDF on both ends. Then when you connect with remote desktop and need
to print something to your local Officejet printer, you choose file/print
and choose the PrimoPDF printer that came over with your remote desktop
session. It will prompt you for a filename (which is local to your own
computer). In this particular scenario, I just make the default Primo output
directory on my computer something like My Documents\PrimoOut. I let the
filename default to output.pdf. It creates a pdf file and automatically
opens Adobe Reader. In Adobe reader, click on the print icon, because at
this point, it is printing from your local computer to the local default
printer. Voila, the output from the remote computer is printed on the
Officejet printer in the local office.

It is a few steps and maybe there is a better way, but for now, I'm calling
it a solution.

If you're still monitoring this thread: I found a way to print directly
to an OfficeJet printer under Remote Desktop. Please respond if
still interested.

Yes, I am interested in seeing if there is another solution to printing
to an OfficeJet USB printer under remote Desktop.

Yes, I am interested in seeing if there is another solution to printing

to an OfficeJet USB printer under remote Desktop.

Here is how you can do it:
1. Install the driver for an HPLJ 4L on the client PC, using LPT1.
2. Install the basic printer driver for the OfficeJet300 (print-only.exe)
on the host. It's downloadable from the HP site.
3. Start an RDP session.
4. Open Properties for the OfficeJet printer.
5. Select the same port for the OfficeJet as is shown for the HPLJ 4L.
It is likely to be at the bottom of the list.

You need the HPLJ4 driver because it's visible in an RDP session.
Step 5 fools the host into "thinking" that it's printing to an HPLJ4,
using the OfficeJet300 driver, when in fact an OfficeJet printer
is connected to the parallel port of the remote.
