Remote Desktop Set up: Problems?

Hi,

I'm a bit of a newbie, so forgive my possibly basic question, but what am I
doing wrong?

I've followed the instructions at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mobility/getstarted/remoteintro.mspx,
which seems straightforward. In the host (XP sp2) computer, I checked "allow
users to connect remotely to this computer" from the Remote tab on the System
Properties tab; made sure "Dont allow excetions" is not checked; checked
"Remote Desktop" from the exceptions tab; launched RDC on the laptop and
entered the IP address of the host.

From the client, I get, "The client could not connect to the remote
computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be
too busy to accept new connections..."

1. I can use the internet as configured right?
2. VPN or a LAN is not required, correct?
3. Is a User Name and Password required? If so, how can I check to see
what they are, and if necessary, reset the password (since I dont recall
having one).
4. Anything else I'm missing?

Any tips would be much appreciated!

Thanks, Steve

See this page for Remote Desktop (RDP) help...

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/RemoteDesktop/RemoteDesktopSetupandTroubleshooting.html

* Call the RDP host using its private static LAN IP address if your calling
from another PC on the same LAN.

* Call the RDP host using its public IP (as assigned by your ISP) if your
calling from a remote location. On the RDP host go to the
http://www.whatismyip.com site and get that information.

* TCP Port 3389 needs to be open and forwarded to the static LAN IP of the
host if the RDP host is behind a router or firewall. Go to the
http://www.canyouseeme.org site to test this.

* You do not need to use a VPN although some folks, including myself do, to
access a RDP host with Remote Desktop.

* The user ID used is local to the RDP host PC. The user must have a
password and be a member of the Remote Desktop Users Group or be an
administrator. On the RDP host go into the Control Panel, select User
Accounts and for the user ID make sure a password is assigned.

How is the RDP host PC connected to the internet, ie. dialup, broadband
router (cable or DSL) or direct to the modem?
