remote desktop over internet VPN, key strokes appear in wrong orde

mostly RD over the VPN works fine, but at a certain time today my remote
desktop session from home into the office over a cisco VPN started to get the
order of my keystrokes wrong, which made any typing very difficult. I would
be typing and would get a sometimes random order of characters showing.

Is this a purely networking issue, eg routing by different routes, or due to
an RD protocol.

Either way, what can I do about it?

Is this a machine that is designed to except unicode input

As I said in my original post, it worked happily for most of the day, and
then about 4pm(ish) it started to go wrong. Its OK again now I think.

The 2 PCs at either end are both Windows XP Pro SP2
