Read about Remote Assistance in XP's Help & Support. If you think it
will be too difficult for him to figure out how to send an invitation
and/or he is behind a router, I've found this very easy and nifty online
remote program called TeamViewer.

It's free and all the helpee needs to do is double-click on the Customer
Module and read the helper (who has installed the Support Module on
his/her computer) two sets of numbers. I am not affiliated with them in
any way - I have used TeamViewer twice now and been very pleased with it.

I have not tried them myself but there are free tools such as RealVnc and
TightVnc that you can try as shown in the links below. You would also have
to open the appropriate port in the firewall/router at your Dad's place to
his computers IP which you may want to make static for the rule to work
best. The last two links explain firewall/router rules/port forwarding
needed.

Hi Bill,

You can simply use remote desktop which is a build in functionality in
Windows XP.
To use this functionality successfully you have to do a couple of things.
First go to System (right-mouse click "My Computer" and select "Properties").
Go to tab "Remote"and select both options and click on OK to save your
settings.
If your father has a router or some other intelligent device of some sort,
port forward 3389 (that port is needed to access you fathers computer). write
down his external ip adress (go to www.whatismyip.com and write his ipadres
down). Go to Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Communications --> Remote
Desktop Connection --> enter the ipadres --> enter username and password (he
needs to have a password on his system or you won't be able to connect to his
pc) --> and you have finaly taken over his computer. You can do what you
want. When you are done let your father know so he can logon (when you
disconnect from his pc he won't know that you did that and he wil have to
login to be able to work further.).
Tell me if this helped.

Greetz,

Alex

XP HOME doesn't have Remote Desktop. it has remote ASSISTANCE which, while
it does more or less the same thing, is a completely different way of
accessing the remote machine.......AFAIK
