Remote Assistance - can't transfer files either

F

Fran

I have MS Messenger 4.7 and also a Netgear MR314 router.
I can CHAT with ms messenger - but cannot use whiteboard,
remote assistance or file transfer. Says files are being
blocked. I see the little tiny window with an icon for
whiteboard and application but they're grayed out. Only
CLOSE is active.

IF this is the router - please specify EXACTLY how I open
a port. It seems like I shouldn't have to do that.

Hi,

Remote Assistance and other similar features require Windows Messenger 4.7 in MSN Messenger
6.x, as such, installing MSN Messenger 6 isn't going to solve anything (besides make file
transfer work so long as the other contacts are using MSN Messenger 6 too).

Greetings Fran,

Even if you do "open ports" it's not going to help. Messenger makes use of a technology
called Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), which allows it to automatically open and forward the
necessary ports in the router automatically without any assistance. Unfortunately it doesn't
look like the MR314 supports UPnP, so you may be out of luck here.
