Reminders starting anew when closing OL

Win XP HE, OL 2002
Hi,
Every time I close OL, the Reminders start up again including the alarms and
Reminder Window, just as if I were starting up OL instead of exiting OL.
This it takes a while for OL to actually shut down.
Is this normal or can I do something about it?
