Reminders in Outlook 2003

I recently upgraded from Outlook 2000 to 2003. I have noticed that any
appointment I add into my calendar, even if the start time has passed, that a
reminder pops up. I would like to turn the reminder default off for past
appointments, but I am unable to locate any setting that does this. I did
not have this problem in 2000 - Outlook simply did not add a reminder to that
appointment. I also have had an issue with reminders popping up for
appointment that I have changed to a new date or canceled completely.

Unfortunately, this turns off the reminder completely, which I would prefer
not to do as I set up a lot of appointments on a regular basis. Any other
ideas?
