Background:

I'm installing an upgraded motherboard in an existing
Compaq system, which requires reinstalling the OS.
Compaq informs me that I can only reload the existing
image using the supplied recovery CD.

So.. I must purchace the retail XP OS to re-install.

Question: Can I purchase the "upgrade" version of XP
(since I have XP loaded on the existing system)-or- Do I
have to use the "full" version.

Thanks in advance,

Dennis

Is the upgraded motherboard a Compaq??

If not, then your original XP recovery CD license can not be transferred
(OEM)

Recovery CDs do not qualify for "Upgrades".

You're not re-formatting the hard drive are you? As long as the
original Compaq OS remains on the HDD, an upgrade version should work
ok. Regardless of what the other post says....

After installing the new MB, do a repair install with the upgrade
version of XP. Go to this web site and read up on how to do it:
