I have kept up with XP Home updates and defragged disk recently. But my
system seems a lot slower than it used to be and I see no CPU hog
processes. Will formatting and reloading XP help?

Let me break out the ole Magic 8 Ball!

It says . . . . Drum Roll, Please . . . . "Snort me!"

Oops wrong kind of 8-ball.

OK, got the right one now!

Oh oh! The Magic 8 Ball says you are sh*t-out-of-luck!

But have you checked for malware using at least ten different tools?

I don't have spyware etc plus as I stated my CPU usage is fine. It just
seems that programs take a lot longer to load. Reload won't help like
it did in Win9X?

Go into device manager, expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section and
double click on the Primary and Secondary Channels. Check the current
transfer mode. Is it DMA or PIO?

DMA If Available for both channels. I am running a Dell Inspiron 2650
laptop with 256 MB RAM.

But what is the current transfer mode - DMA? If so then look elsewhere.
If PIO that could be the problem.
