I suspect a virus or corruption of winsock or tcp/ip.
All of a sudden I can not use IE6 nor Outlook. I can
ping a server fine so the network is active (cable modem)
but all web pages come up as "Page can not be displayed".
Outlook fails due to "no socket".

I downloaded IE 6 to do a reinstall but can't get to the
web site to run the process. I can't get to Symantec to
update my virus defs. I can't get anywhere even using
the ip address for the http://

What to do?

Check your hosts file (I sound like a broken record...).

Can you ping a Website? What IP number comes back when you do it? If
it's something like 127.0.0.0, or anything strange, it's very likely
that your hosts file is redirecting your computer. Either edit it, or
just rename it to something other than 'hosts'.

I renamed hosts and same result. I can ping and get a
valid IP on return. It does appear though that my url is
being redirected. I can quickly see "opening page" in the
status bar then quickly comes back as can not be displayed.
