Release of Cell Protection?

Hi:
Got a problem attempting to re-format a few cells to a different color\fill.
I've checked Tools\Format\Cells\Protection and the setting are blank; but I
can't get rid of or change the "fill" colors. Can anyone help?

GBL, the cells might have data validation on them, check and see if that is
the case

Thanks for the hint. It put me on the correct path. I had used Contitional
Formatting; which was the problem.

GBL, that is what I was thinking of, don't know why I put validation!, must
have been a Monday!!
