release and renew ip address

why do i have to release and renew my ip address, every
time i turn on or restart my computer? I use windows xp
and my norton anti-virus master boot record shows no
evidence of a virus, worm or trojan horse. I am a norton
subscriber so i get reg. virus updates and do weekly
scans. the release/renew requirement still exists. can
i fix this on my own?

Doe you use a router,cable modem or ADSL modem?
Is your computer "networked"?
Some routers lease your IP address to your computer for a week
Sounds like your configuration for internet connections and or network
settings is not right!
