HI,

Have a few simple questions that I thought I'd separate
out into a separate thread or two in order to pair down
the complexity of my "saga" in the referenced thread.
If I'm in violation of an etiquette, feel free to let
me know, but these issues will be separate enough to be
their own threads. Here's the first one.

XP Pro:
Device Manager in past Windows' used to show the
Printers in the tree. In XP Pro it doesn't seem to
show the printers. I have two printers installed,
which used to work fine and now don't.

Neither printer shows in any way I can find in the
Device Manager. Is that correct?

If they ARE there, where are they supposed to be? The
only other thing relevant to them that I see is LPT
ports, but those aren't printers, and there is no
printer data there. The ONLY reference I can find to
anything printer like is the driver, for instance, for
the Epson printer, but nowhere is there the printer
itself listed.

Other than Add/Remove Programs, what is the best way to
Remove the physical printers? I know I can Disable
them and remove the drivers, etc., but I'd like to
physically REMOVE the printers from the computer so
that when I put them back it's sort of like doing a
"clean install" including the New Hardware Found
messages.

TIA,

Pop

Did you check the printer manufacturer websites to be sure your printers are
compatible with XP, did you check those sites for the latest XP drivers for
your printers?

There is no single answer to your question with regard to how the printers
are seen in device manager or how best to remove them. Different printers
and manufacturer's have their own scenarios, you might want to check your
documentation or recommendations at their websites for removal instructions.
Usually, you go into the Printer applet in Control Panel, right click the
printer, click delete and you will be asked if you wish to delete the other
associated files no longer in use. However, if you have bundled software
you may have to remove that separately but the steps to do so would vary.

As to Device Manager, again, this varies by type of printer, how the
manufacturer has designed the drivers, how it is connected, etc. I have an
HP multifunction printer that is clearly listed in Device Manager with a USB
symbol to the right in the list and a designation of the type of printer as
in Dot4 HP1200, this is picked up from the drivers.

If you see no designation, it's possible the printers are not installed, a
good possibility given they don't work so as I said above, your best bet
would be the manufacturer's websites.

Just to emphasize Michael's point: I have an HP 712c (LPT) and an Epson
S9000 (USB). These do *not* show in the tree. They're in the Printers and
Fax folders only.

For USB printers, it's very important to install exactly as the
manufacturer suggests. Usually printer and drivers first. Attach printer
when prompted. If you attach the printer too soon, the manufacturer's
drivers can end up conflicting with the XP drivers for control of the
printer.

Also check manufacturer directions for attaching printer to a network. Some
require installation of drivers on other systems that will be accessing the
printer remotely.
