Rejoin Computer a/c to Domain?

S

Scott

In Active Directory Users and Computers I right-clicked on
a computer and reset the account not realising that as the
help documentation says:

"Resetting a computer account breaks that computer's
connection to the domain and requires it to rejoin the
domain."

If it's fairly straight forward could someone please
explain how to rejoin this computer to the domain?

We have a single domain and a single domain controller.

Thanks

Right-click My Computer on the workstation in question and select Properties.
Go to the Computer Name tab and tell Windows that it's part of a workgroup
(not a domain)
Reboot when requested.
Now do the same thing again only this time tell Windows that the PC is a
member of a domain. Put in the domain name and domain admin password when
requested.
Reboot and you're all done.

Scott,

If you are in the ADUC and you go to the COMPUTERS container ( or to
whatever OU that you created and into which you moved the computer account
objects ) and select a computer account object, right click and select reset
account you are not removing this computer account object from the domain.
You have simply reset the secure channel ( part of netlogon ) between that
particular computer and the domain controller. This ( the secure channel )
sometimes becomes corrupted and resetting it resolves several problems.
There should be no need rejoin that computer account to the domain....

I would be curious as to why you are doing this. What was the original
problem that is causing you to want to 'reset account'?

Also, if you don't mind, I might suggest that you get a second Domain
Controller in your environment as fast as your budget allows. I would also
encourage you to install the Support Tools on all of your WIN2000 Servers.
The Support Tools are located on the WIN2000 Server CD as well as on the
WIN2000 Service Pack CD in the Support | Tools folder. I would go with the
Service Pack - or download them from the MS Web Site.

Brain explosion!

Problem probably isn't related to active directory but if
you have a quick answer...
I lost mapping from server to D drive on XP workstation
(using D$). Drive still showed but wouldn't expand and
gave error message. I disconnected the mapping and on
trying to remap drive I get the message:

"The mapped network drive could not be created because the
following error has occurred: Not enough server storage is
available to process command"

I can map to the D drive on a supposedly identical
workstation. The only recent change made to the problem
workstation was a Windows update (could have been for
Internet Explorer) run on Aug 1.

Would appreciate any help but maybe I should try
Networking newsgroup.

Thanks
