I have missing files in my display properties and get errors when I try to
change anything in DP.If I run my Windows XP cd will I lose everything I have
on my pc or will it rewrite whats is on the cd and correct the problem? Also
when I download things and it ask to open with it always has notebook and
will not open anything and I cannot install them. Thank You all for any
help.

the windows cd can
serve to do three
things:

1) fully install windows
2) repair the current windows
3) log into the disk system

when you repair windows-(2)
the cd will compare whats
on the disk to what is on
the cd.

then the cd will simply replace
any system files that are missing
or have been corrupted with
genuine ones.

the repair method is
easier, safer and will
only focus on the system
files and nothing else, thus
preserving your personal
files.

however, if a freeware
or non microsoft program
stops working afterwards,
it is probably because it
was the cause of your
problems.

but as we know, it is better
for windows to be functional
than a crappy program.

here are the instructions
to perform a repair:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

there is an important fact
with using your cd, in that
the sp version on the cd
has to be the same as the
version on your hard drive.

so if you have upgraded
operating system to sp3
version but you only have
the sp2 cd, then the repair
option will not work.
