Reinstalling WinXP home without CD ROM.

I get an error message when I try to run disk defrag in
WinXP Home
edition. Error reads "Windows has encountered a problem
with
Microsoft Management Console and needs to close the
program". Does
anyone have a solution? I probably need to re-install
Winxp over
what I have to fix files. My Winxp cd is damaged. Can I
re-install
WinXP Home edition from my hard drive and if so where is
the set up
file located? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Have you upgrades to sp1, if so, a lot of files needed to do any repair will
be stored on your hard disk, either in \windows\system32\dllcache or in
\windows\servicepackfiles\i386

If you haven;t installed sp1, do so. This may replace any offending file.

If you have try running system file checker, which will try to restore files
from the 2 places I listed above

start/run
sfc /scannow

If it can't find the file to do the repair in either of these 2 places, then
it may prompt for the windows xp release cd.

What kind of windows xp cd do you have ? What do you mean damaged ?
Is it a retail product cd, or a recovery cd supplied with the pc by the
manufacturer.

If its a retail cd, you should be able to get a replacement from microsoft
support as long as you still have the original license key. I suppose they
may make a small charge for this.

If it came with the pc, then contact the pc manufacturer.
