Reinstalling Wins 98

I have a Gateway Esential 500, which I have had since 2000. Recently, my son
attempted to upgrade our operating system from the Wins 98 it came with to
the new Wins XP. Unforunately, he did not know that one conuld not take a
copy of XP that is installed on one PC & install it to another. This caused
my pc to start malfunctioning. We then attempted to reinstall Wins 98 without
success. When we would start the PC it would allow us to attempt to change
the system setup, which we do not know the password, or allow it to attempt
to load the operating system. Unable to get into the system setup, we
received an error message informing " Unable to find opertating system". This
past weekend we bought a new hard drive, more memory, and were attempting to
cercumvent the problem by installing Wins 98 on the new hard drive. The
manual that came with the new hard drive says that the PC should recognize
the new hard drive. It does not. The PC goes through the same process, but
now does not give us the error message. It now just has a flashing dash. My
question to you is how can I just install the new hard drive, with my copy of
Wins 98 so my son can use it for his school work?

Steve;
Check the jumper on the back of the new and old hard drive hard drive.
They should be in the same setting assuming new hard drive replace old.

The Essential 500 originally came with a set of 3 CDs used to reinstall
Windows.
Boot from the second CD and follow the prompts.
